The term missio Dei means literally "the mission of God." Though the phrase itself has a long history in circles of people who study the theology of mission, it is not widely known by most Christians. But it is a phrase that perfectly sums up the perspective of the Bible. As Christopher J.H. Wright says, "There is one God at work in the universe and in human history, and ... this God has a goal, a purpose, a mission that will ultimately be accomplished by the power of God's Word and for the glory of God's name. This is the mission of the biblical God" (2006, 64). This truth is the basis for what we examine in the book, Missio Dei: Joining God on the Adventure of a Lifetime. We look at how the mission of God is the centerpiece of all of history, but also at how we are invited to participate with God on that mission. Thus, the subtitle of this book Joining God on the Adventure of a Lifetime. We are invited to be a part of God's mission. This book and this course are intended to offer perspective on both the mission of God and how to join Him in it.
